1930s Era
In 1901, the Croghan Volunteer Fire Deparment operated out of Fireman's Hall, located where today's Croghan Free Library stands. This, however, is not the same building as the original was destroyed several times by devastating fires. As the need for more equipment grew to fulfill the community's needs, it became obvious that the Fire Department needed more space. In the autumn of 1911, the Department erected a Hose Carriage House at the lower end of town (near today's American Legion) and a second Carriage House in the back of the old Miller House (Nice 'n' Easy), bringing the number of stations to three. Keep in mind that the Fire Department's entire fleet was man drawn at this time.

In May of 1929, a committee was formed to search for a more suitable place to house fire apparatus. They reported that a building known as the Waterhouse Blacksmith Shop was available. It measured 29 feet by 35 feet with a second story that would be able to house all Fire Department operations. A deal was made to purchase the property for $1500.00.

The Department renovated in 1956, adding two bays, and again in 1976 to add three larger bays. This property has been the Fire Hall until this spring when the Department moved into their new facility.

A building committee was again formed in January of 2001 as Department members began talking about replacing a vehilce and had no place to put it. The committee began meeting immediately looking at new construction versus renovating the existing structure. Soon it was realized that a new building was well within our reach financially without any additional tax burden to any of us. The committee began meeting more often to put a plan in place to take to the general membership. The Fire Department voted overwhelminingly in the spring of 2002 to go ahead with the construction of the new facility using local contrators and suppliers with an estimated cost of $440,000. $240,000 would come from Fire Departments savings and the remainder from a loan from the state of New York with a pay back of 20 years at
2 1/2% interest.

Site work began immediately with actual construction of the building beginning in September. The Fire Department moved in March of this year (2003). The total cost of the 11,600 square foot facility was $450,000.
